Description:
Here is new music from Rika (of Austria) and Empire! Empire!, put together with gorgeous album artwork to match the three stunning tracks. I'm not sure this would be the most accessible introduction to whatever current wave of emo this is (seventeenth or eighteenth now?), but for anybody that knows either or both bands will be thrilled to know that this is a dead-on release. I think Empire!'s Keith told me at a show once that splits were really meant for the bands and for die-hard fans, and maybe that's true; one thing for certain is that it's a good day to be a fan. Count Your Lucky Stars and Goddamn Records (Europe) came together to put this split out, and it's worth writing them in thanks. Rika's nearly seven minute epic is a perfect encapsulation of the sound that makes European emo distinct. Things like a cool Austrian accent over English lyrics and the slightly different progressions and energy that got me excited about emo across the sea when I first started listening to bands from labels like BSM are here to keep you warm in a rainstorm. Also, there's a flugelhorn in here. Perhaps the centerpiece of the record is Empire's second song. It's the kind of song that I can already tell will be one of those that have fingers crossed in anticipation that they play live, having it's title called out by anxious fans wanting to hear the opening strains that sing out like an auditory delicacy. Each ear truly dedicated in stereo to only one guitar. If you're interested in a song that lives and breathes and haunts you, here you are. "This is how my heart broke," could sound so trite in just about every other context, but here, here it is undeniably sincere.
Please purchase this record from Count Your Lucky Stars if you live stateside, and if you live abroad, please give Goddamn Records your business. You will not be disappointed.
